5 ways to stop biting your nails

I must say I am guilty of this beauty crime, here are some techniques to help you create your set of healthy nails. Easy tips that can help you stop biting your nails and allow your nails to grow longer:

1. Apply two coats of hard-nail fingernail polish
2. If you're going to bite your nails think about what they will look like once you have bitten them, disgusting
3. When you feel the need to bite your nails, chew a piece of gum
4. Put lemon juice on your nails. When you go to bite your nails, you'll taste the sour flavour of the citrus lemon
5. Wear gloves, that cover the nails, in nail biting situations

No more dry hands!

Here is a DIY treatment to leave your hands feeling fresh and silky soft!

Ingredients:
Almond or olive oil
Rich hand cream

Method:
Run yourself a warm, shallow bath. Cover your hands in the oil ensuring you rub the oil into your nails too. Smooth on lots of the hand cream and then soak your hands in the bath for about 10 minutes. Once the 10 minutes is up gently pat your hands dry and apply some more of the hand cream. You'll be amazed by the results!

Reason behind the ingredients:
The oil and cream are great moisturisers. The oil will also help your nails grow stronger and the cream acts as a barrier around the oil to encourage it to sink into your skin.

Tip for Spots

Green Tea Ice Cubes
A quick, cheap and effective way of keeping those spots at bay, is by freezing green tea into ice cubes. Keep these ice cubes in the freezer until needed. If a spot has popped up on your face, simply take an ice cube out of the freezer and place over your zit. Green Tea is an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory so it is ideal for treating spots or acne. The cool ice will also help to reduce the redness of the spot.

Work Experience

Last week I took a 5 day work experience placement at Psychologies Magazine. I had first day nerves on the Monday but they were soon settled by the warm welcome I received. I had so much fun over the week due to the program they set up for me and 3 other work experience students. We were set tasks such as taking live twitter interviews, typing up old articles to upload on to the website, a review of a book to post on the company's blog, to sit in meetings, to create the dummy magazine wall and to sort through the beauty press releases. We were really lucky as it was lovely and sunny all week so we went for country walks at lunchtime. I really enjoyed my work there and I now know that I want to pursue a career in journalism.

Here are a few tips for people going for work experience or a first job:
. Stand up straight with your hands out of your pockets.
. Talk with a certain confidence in your voice, but remember there is a fine line between confidence and arrogance.
. Pluck up courage to speak to others in your work placement, ask questions and get to know them better.
. Practice good eye contact and body language - perhaps in a mirror beforehand.
. Show enthusiasm in your work placement by completing tasks to the best of your ability - however small they may be.
. Dress smartly or correctly for your sector of work - for example if you are turning up to a kitchen ensure you have your apron, or if you are working on a building site make sure you wear your boots and hard hat.
. Get to know the company or people you are working for before you go - getting to know them better means you can join in conversations and it also shows interest in the company.
. Get a good nights sleep the night before so you are not tired on the first day. You yawning over your late night, might come across that you are bored or unimpressed.
. Be organised and punctual - first impressions mean a lot.
. Have fun and smile!

2 Homemade Face Masks to Beat Acne

Acne is a problem that I think most teenagers and young adults experience. Here are 2 really simple, cheap and effective ways to prevent these breakouts.

Recipe 1
Chocolate and Lemon

Ingredients:
. 2 tbsp of Cocoa Powder
. 1 tsp of lemon zest
. 1 egg yolk

Method:
Mix all of these ingredients to make a paste which you can smear over your face or just the affected area. Leave this face mask on for at least 20 minutes, then wash over with a face cloth and warm water.

Reason behind the ingredients:
Cocoa is high in antioxidants so great for fighting acne.
Lemons have mild astrigent qualities that reduce the amount of oil in your skin. They also contain citric acids that act as an antiseptic and kill bacteria.
Egg whites are similar to lemons as they contain mild astrigent qualities.

Recipe 2
Granola
Ingredients:
. 2 tbsp of honey
. 2 tbsp of grated apple
. 1 tbsp of porridge oats

Method:
Mix all the ingredients together to make a lumpy paste which you can place all over your face. Leave this mask on for 20 minutes also, then wash off with a face cloth and warm water.

Reason behind the ingredients:
Honey is antibacterial so great for beating acne.
Apples are full of water and hydration is key for treating your skin. Apples are also full of Vitamin A and C, calcium, iron, phosphorous and potassium.
Porridge oats act as a great exfoliate to eliminate dry skin cells.

Try out these face masks and see if they make a difference!
